Mill and Lathe Project

Two main projects throughout the semester for ME 41, SJSU's Machine Shop Safety course.

1. Mailbox Project

- Learned how to manipulate sheet metal and wood.

- Used belt sanders, band saws, files, and other hand tools

- Assembled together resulted in a mailbox where the "box" portion was made of sheet metal, and then the post, and bases were made of pine wood.

2. Lathe and Mill Project

- Designed the project parts in SolidWorks and then created standard view drawings

- Learned how to operate a lathe by machining an aluminum rod into an object that would connect to the mill part

- Learned how to operate a mill by machining a block of aluminum into an object that would connect to the lathe part

- Learned techniques like facing, turning, chamfering, counter-sinking, and other general lathe procedures

- Learned techniques like counter-sinking, chamfering, threading, and other general mill procedures

- Combining the mill and lathe parts resulted in a coat hanger
